Zamioculcas zamiiofolia
(Zanzibar Gem / ZZ Plant )
Native to lowlands in East Africa preferring dry rocky terrain, a herbaceou perennial adapted to drought conditions. It spreads via its bulbous rhizomes in which it stores water, as well as in its thick stems
Position - in bright indirect light, will tolerate partial shade but growth will be slower.
Some morning sun is fine, but shade from hot direct sun.
Water - allow soil to dry out between waterings, then water moderately. Never allow pot to sit in water as roots will rot.
Feed - apply diluted liquid fertiliser once a month from spring to autumn
- Over watering will cause root rot and stem bases will blacken and collapse. Yellowing leaves may be an inital sign
- Under watering will cause the leaves and stems to pucker, turn brown or yellow, shrivel and fall. Stems may splay outwards
-Keep the glossy leaves free of dust with a damp cloth
-When re potting use a peat free succulent and cacti compost for optimal drainage
Although often cited as a plant good for shade, these will grow much better in a brighter spot
with indirect light.
