Phlebodium aureum
Blue Star Fern / Hare’s Foot Fern
(including the cultivar ‘Davana’)
Native to tropical forest canopies through the Americas where it grows as an epiphyte on branches of trees and trunks
Position - happy in bright filtered light to partial shade. Enjoys some morning sun. Works well in a plant hanger
Water - often enough to keep rootball just moist, but do not allow the compost to become soggy. Water around the edges of the plant, never directly through its centre.
Humidity - prefers moderate to high. Standing pot on a tray of damp pebbles can help. Bathrooms are ideal locations
Feed - apply liquid feed 2 or 3 times between March and October
- Avoid cold and hot drafts.
- Leaf browning usually indicates a lack of humidity
- The roots require oxygen, keep in loose organic matter, allowing aeration
and avoiding compaction.
- The hairy rhizomatous roots are aerial, so don’t cut these off!
